Michael Voss

Michael Voss (born July 7, 1975) is a legend of the modern era of Aussie Rules, usually playing midfield or in the forward line for the Brisbane Lions. At 183cm, Voss was renowned for his hardness at the ball, inspirational leadership and the ability to turn a game by his presence at the contest. Voss is considered one of the finest players of his generation.

Born in Victoria, his family moved to Brisbane when he was 11. When he debuted in 1992 for the Brisbane Bears he was the youngest player to have ever played for the club.

When the bears turned into lions in 1997, Voss’s leadership qualities were recognised and he was named captain alongside Alastair Lynch, at the ripe old age of 21!

In 1998 he had his first major setback when his leg was smashed in an incident at Subiaco oval in Perth. He spent 10 months out of the game but came back even more determined.

The years between 2001 and 2004 will long be remembered for the pure dominance of Voss’s Brisbane Lions side. They won three premierships in a row (’01-’03) and lost the fourth to Port Adelaide. During this period they were one of the most feared teams in Aussie Rules history. Virtually unbeatable at home, many games were won on reputation alone before a ball was bounced!

Voss was the perfect captain for this period. He led by impeccable example. Hard at the ball, strong hands, pinpoint handpassing and kicking and tough yet fair on and off the football field. Not only was he respected by his team, but by the other 15 as well.

Along with his 3 premierships with the lions, Voss had a stellar career. He won the Brownlow medal for the league’s best and fairest in 1996, tying with James Hird. He twice won the Leigh Matthews trophy for best and fairest at the lions. He was a 5 time All-Australian, captaining the International Rules team in 2001.

Michael Voss retired in 2006 after playing a massive 289 games for Brisbane.
