Steve Roach

One of the best prop forwards to play for Australia during the 1980’s and early 1990’s.

A veteran of 185 first grade games with his beloved Balmain Tigers and his first at the tender age of 19.

In the 1989 club season his combination with Paul Sironen, Benny Elias and Wayne Pearce was one of the strongest packs in club rugby league history.

During his illustrious career he represented NSW

17 times in State of Origin and played 39 tests for the Australian Kangaroos. With his solid and stocky build he excelled as a bull-like runner up the middle combined with powerful runs close to the ruck. At his peak he was considered one of the best, if not the best, number one prop in the world of rugby league.

On a lighter side, Blocker was notorious for his on-field controversial behaviour and considered very lucky not to receive a heavy suspension after patting referee Eddie Ward on the head as he was ordered from the field!

For a number of years now Blocker has been a member of the very funny and entertaining Continuous Call Team at 2GB alongside Ray Hadley, Paul Sironen, and Darryl Brohman. His career TV exploits include Channel 9 commentator, Footy Show appearances, Sportsworld regular and Lowes model.

In 2000 Roach was awarded the Australian Sports Medal.
